In statistics, a hypothesis is a claim or statement about a property of a population. We form hypotheses all the time. The main objective of this unit is to develop the ability to conduct hypothesis tests for claims made about a population proportion p, a population mean µ, or a population standard deviation

. A hypothesis test is a procedure for testing a claim about a property of a population.

The P-value method of testing a hypothesis involves a procedure of 6 steps: (1) state the claim, (2) form the null and alternate hypotheses, (3) calculate the test statistic, z, using the given formula, (4) look up z inTable A-2 and find the table entry, which is called the P-value, (5) compare the P-value to the significance level, α, of the hypothesis test, (6) make a conclusion based on step 5.
